As a mom, I have so much to do daily. I am running around with my kids and their activities, I am in school for my MBA, blogging, working a Nine- to -Five and tending to my husband. I haven’t mentioned the normal daily task of cooking, grocery shopping, cleaning, and laundry. So how does one have the energy to do all of this. I really focus on the foods I eat to give me strength and sometimes caffeine as “cheat food”. I will explain what “cheat food” is later in this post.
Origin – Southeast Asia
Benefits– bananas are considered a carbohydrate, and the more green, the more starch. It’s high in fiber which helps to fight against colon cancer and the riper the banana the faster your energy level rises or increase blood sugar.
I usually eat a banana right before a workout to get an energy boost. It is great to take to work or if you are on the go. If you are a smoothie lover, then use bananas in your smoothie, and it’s a good, convenient way to get energy. I use Vitamix, it’s more on the pricy side but it’s well worth it. I hate it when my smoothie is chunky and not properly blended. I will assure you that it will be smooth, and you can use it more than just for smoothies. Below is one of my favorite recipes
Banana Energy Smoothie
Hand full of strawberries
Pinch of ginger
Tsp. of agave nectar (as needed)
Ice (Hand Full)
A person can live a month without food, but only a week without H2O
Benefits– helps the brain function, help you to physically function, helps with weight loss
Good old water is the best and reasonable way to replenish yourself. Water makes up 60% of a human body and muscles & kidneys using 79% of that. So, if you are running around being a busy mom you are using a lot of energy. You need to replenish with water more. I usually carry a gallon of water with me. It looks ridiculous but you won’t forget to get your water intake. I recommend keeping one in the car, at work, and beside the bed.
Signs you are Dehydrated
- Increased anxiety
- Frequency of headaches
- Dark urine
- Muscle cramping
3. Dark Leafy Greens
Did you Know: Kale has more vitamin C than orange
Benefit– high in iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and vitamins A, C, E and K. Greens provide a lot of protein that the body uses for energy.
I recommend eating Kale and Spinach in a salad. It is better to consume vegetables like greens in raw form. This way you can ensure you will receive all the nutrients your body needs. Another way is by using a steamer. I like to use Cuisinart Vegetable Steamer and I usually pour olive oil over the vegetables. Here is an article to find out what olive oil is the best to use. People tend to overcook their vegetables and don’t receive many nutrients. In case you were wondering Collard greens are my favorite, I can eat a whole pot by myself.
Did you Know: Apples gives more energy than caffeinated coffee
Benefits– vitamins C, K, A, E, B1, B2, B6, potassium, polyphenols, fiber, manganese, and copper. Helps with weight loss, lower blood pressure, help prevent cancer, protect the brain.
There just might be some truth to the saying, an apple a day keeps the doctor away. I buy apples like crazy in my home my kids can’t get enough of them. A great way you can fit an apple into your daily routine is one in the morning for breakfast and in the evening for snack. Instead of having that lovely chocolate cake (a cheat food) I replace with apples and almond butter.
*I talked about cheat foods earlier, I have special occasions or days I will sneak Starbucks coffee or tiramisu for energy and taste
Origin: Green tea accidently originated in China
Benefits– Rich in polyphenols (cancer fighting agents), improve brain function, burns fat, helps with weight loss and fights against bacteria. Ginseng boost energy, reduce stress, and lowers blood sugar.
The best green tea to drink is Longjing (China) & Sencha green tea (Japan). It is best to brew the tea or steep. I don’t by the bottled tea it doesn’t taste well and less beneficial. There are also added ingredients that aren’t necessarily healthy. I love the taste of Ginseng and its benefits; I need all the energy I can get. I also add some organic raw honey for a natural sweetener.
